Demografi

 

Penduduk Kabupaten Cilacap setiap tahun terus bertambah, menurut hasil registrasi penduduk pada akhir tahun 2004 mencapai 1.709.908 jiwa yang terdiri dari laki-laki 855.838 jiwa dan perempuan 854.070 jiwa.
Selama 5 tahun terakhir rata-rata pertumbuhan penduduk per tahun sebesar 0,69 persen, dengan pertumbuhan tertinggi terjadi pada tahun 2000 (1,20 persen), dan terendah pada tahun 2004 (0,31 persen). Pertumbuhan ini merupakan pertumbuhan penduduk yang terendah sejak tahun 1984.
Komposisi penduduk berdasarkan jenis kelamin menunjukkan jumlah penduduk laki-laki sedikit lebih banyak dibanding penduduk perempuan, yang diindikasikan dengan angka sex ratio sebesar 1002. Sementara itu dari distribusi penduduk menurut kecamatan, memperlihatkan Kecamatan Majenang adalah yang paling banyak penduduknya yaitu sebesar 120.290 jiwa (7,0 persen), diikuti Kecamatan Kroya sebesar 101.358 jiwa (5,93 persen) kemudian Kecamatan Gandrungmangu sebesar 100.014 jiwa (5,85 persen). Sedangkan yang berpenduduk paling kecil adalah Kecamatan Kampunglaut, yaitu sebesar 13.540 jiwa (0,79 persen).

Bila diamati dari umur penduduk, diperoleh jumlah penduduk yang berusia dibawah 15 tahun (penduduk anak-anak) adalah 497.436 jiwa atau sebesar 29,10 persen, yang berarti penduduk Kabupaten Cilacap termasuk kategori umur "sedang". Dari umur penduduk dapat diketahui pula angka rasio ketergantungan penduduk Kabupaten Cilacap tahun 2004 sebesar 54,02 persen, yang berarti tiap 100 orang usia produktif harus menanggung 54 orang usia non produktif.
